Public Meeting, June 29th: The State of Aquaculture in RI’s Salt Ponds

The public is invited to attend an education program focused on the state of aquacultue in Rhode Island’s Salt Ponds.The program will feature experts who will provide different perspectives on this topic and will offer the community the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns about aquaculture.

The event is part of the Rhode Island Shellfish Initiative which recognizes the economic and cultural value of shellfish and is an effort of Governor Gina Raimondo and a host of partners — state agencies, industry, academic and community partners focused on leveraging collaborative and creative opportunities to sustainably manage local shellfish stock, promote economic growth and jobs, and celebrate Rhode Island’s unique food cultures.

Join Us on September 29th to Give Input on the RI Shellfish Management Plan

Please join us for a public meeting to discuss the RI Shellfish Management Plan (SMP) on Monday, September 29th, 5pm-7pm in Corless Auditorium at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography. At this meeting, we will announce the completed Shellfish Management Plan ready for public review, discuss SMP progress and actions over the last year, glimpse into each chapter, and discuss future steps in an open forum. We also will hear summer highlights from industry leaders and get inspired from Director Coit. Refreshments will be served prior to the event. All are welcome, but space is limited so please RSVP to smp@etal.uri.edu

Reminder: SMP Stakeholder Meeting Wednesday, May 15th

May Stakeholder Meeting and Seminar Series Lecture

Please join us on Wednesday, May 15th from 5 – 7pm, in Corless Auditorium, URI-GSO Narragansett Bay Campus for the third RI Shellfish Management Plan (SMP) Stakeholder Meeting.

The purpose of the meeting will be to provide an update of the SMP, including the plan’s progress, on-going projects, and proposed next steps. In addition, we will host the 3rd Seminar in our SMP Seminar Series entitled: “Room Enough For Everyone? Addressing User Conflicts in Narragansett Bay and the Coastal Ponds.” Our panelists will speak about the myriad of marine activities and audiences present in the Bay and ponds, many of them competing for the same spaces. How do we balance uses, needs, and future growth? Panelists will speak about the concept of “social carrying capacity” and possible strategies to minimize conflicts on the water. Your questions and discussion are highly encouraged. We hope you will join us and send this invitation to others you think would be interested in this topic.

March Stakeholder Meeting Recap

We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the 2nd SMP Stakeholder meeting on March 20th at the URI Bay Campus! We had over 75 people attend a very productive and informative session. A special thank you to Angelo Liberti and the DEM Office of Water Resources team for presenting and clarifying various water quality regulations using specific and familiar examples. His presentation is available for download below.

Additionally, we were able to share with attendees the first draft of the SMP Goals and Objectives with the hopes that participants will review these more thoroughly and provide us with comments (email to smp@etal.uri.edu) by April 25, 2013.
